Abstract

The Role of Social Media in Migrant Crises: An Analysis on X (Twitter) Comments After the Kayseri Incidents

This study examines how migrant crises are reflected on social media in the context of social identity theory. The research focuses on the comments on the Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya's microblogging application X (Twitter) on June 30, 2024, following the incidents related to Syrians in Kayseri province of Turkey on June 30, 2024 (incidents in Kayseri after a Syrian man allegedly sexually assaulted a child). The significance of this study is that by examining the impact of social media on migrant crises and public reactions to these crises, it reveals the critical role of digital platforms on information flow, misinformation and social polarization. It also offers a new and important perspective on the representation of migrants and crisis management through comments from different segments of society. The research is based on qualitative research method and content analysis technique. As a result of the analysis, it is seen that different types of comments emerged. These are; comments that support the statement of the Minister of Interior and emphasize empathy and solidarity, negative and divisive comments with intense anti-immigrant and racist attacks, positive comments defending the rights of immigrants and their integration into society, political comments criticizing the government's stance on the incident, provocative and provocative comments that encourage violence and incite the public, comments that spread misinformation about the incident and contain conspiracy theories claiming that different forces are behind the incident. These results are critical in terms of showing how events are shaped through social media and are also important in terms of understanding how public reactions are managed.
